William D. Kelly, IV
William’s general practice focuses on complex litigation, corporate and transactional work. After spending a decade working primarily for large law firms, he started Kelly Law in 2024 in order to better serve his clients.
As a litigator, William has represented plaintiffs and defendants in all types of matters and roles. His wide-ranging plaintiff work includes litigating small personal injury cases and serving as lead class counsel in class actions representing tens of thousands of victims. In addition, he has extensive experience defending people and entities—whether a small business or a Fortune 500 company—in high-stakes litigation against a variety of claims, including those focused on commercial litigation, product liability, construction liability, toxic tort, transportation liability, catastrophic injury and wrongful death. His unique prior litigation experience serving both plaintiffs and defendants provides him with a deep understanding of how to ensure the best outcome for his clients no matter the dispute.
Separate from his litigation practice, William also has broad corporate and business counseling experience. Having served as General Counsel for a large online retailer, he has vast knowledge on issues like business formation, mergers and acquisitions, business structuring, contracts, corporate governance, regulatory compliance, due diligence and risk assessment, intellectual property disputes and employment matters.
William further has a robust transactional practice, focusing on commercial and residential real estate, in addition to wills, estates and trusts. He understands how important real estate transactions and estate planning are to his clients and provides the most thorough and cost-effective services possible.
William’s dedication to his clients has not gone unnoticed. In 2022, he was named a Super Lawyers “Rising Star,” a distinction reserved for only 2.5% of Illinois attorneys. The process involves a nomination, independent research and peer evaluation.
Born and raised in the Chicagoland area, William earned his J.D. with honors from the University of Illinois College of Law, where he served as an associate editor of the University of Illinois Law Review. He also worked as a law clerk for the Honorable Holly C. Clemons of the Illinois Sixth Judicial Circuit Court. Additionally, William holds a B.A. from the University of Miami, where he graduated magna cum laude and was a member of the Golden Key International Honor Society. While earning his undergraduate degree, he studied abroad at Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic.
When he is not fighting for his clients, William enjoys spending his free time with family and walking his two dogs. His friends would say he is happiest when checking out a concert at one of Chicago’s music venues or hosting a tailgate before cheering on his beloved (and frustrating) Miami Hurricanes.
William is admitted to practice law in Illinois, and he has extensive experience in both state and federal court.
